Yaël Dillies (Jan 14 2022 at 16:33):
We need the half :ring: emoji!
Yaël Dillies (Jan 14 2022 at 16:54):
I'm half joking, we actually already have :semiring: on the Discord server!
Patrick Massot (Jan 14 2022 at 16:55):
I know that some people here have the power to add new emojis.
Anne Baanen (Jan 14 2022 at 17:07):
You should be able to add it by going to the "organization settings" in the top-right menu (the :gear: icon)
Arthur Paulino (Jan 14 2022 at 17:09):
[offtopic: anyone can do it? seems a bit scary to me :open_mouth:]
Yaël Dillies (Jan 14 2022 at 17:10):
It's also disappointing that :semi_truck: isn't half a truck.
Mario Carneiro (Jan 14 2022 at 17:10):
I also would prefer people not abuse this privilege, but the list of emoji hasn't exploded too much
Mario Carneiro (Jan 14 2022 at 17:13):
Actually, there is a setting to limit this to maintainers, and considering that all emoji thus far have been added by maintainers except for one, I'm inclined to check that box and have people ping a maintainer to add an emoji

Can you also ask them in the request to give a reading of what it means. As we already know different emoji mean different things to people in different places. This way we can eventually get a glossary of emoji meanings.
Mario Carneiro (Jan 14 2022 at 19:19):
that sounds like an independent thing
Mario Carneiro (Jan 14 2022 at 19:19):
an emoji is just a picture as far as zulip integration is concerned
Mario Carneiro (Jan 14 2022 at 19:20):
emoji meaning is really descriptive linguistics: watch how people use it and maybe you can get an idea

I know an emoji does not come with a description. What I am asking is that we have a separate topic that shows the common emoji used here and then shows the common reading (meaning) of the emoji. When a new one is added the person adding it can say what it means so that others will then know what it means if they use it.

Ah, that kills half of the fun :D
Kevin Buzzard (Jan 14 2022 at 19:51):
I've been here since the start and have very little idea what some of the emoji mean. TIL that here :horse: is the glue emoji though. Very important in algebraic geometry.
Arthur Paulino (Jan 14 2022 at 19:53):
Sometimes it's already hard enough for me to remind myself that I'm not a robot. Reading an emoji cheatsheet and feeling myself forced to follow it would crush what's left of my soul. That would be checkmate!
