Topic: Natural number game translation

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:15):

Because of virus lock-downs, I'm looking for video games for my 12 years old son. Inspired by Scott's son, I thought about trying the natural number game. But my son can't read English, so everybody is welcome to help with https://github.com/ImperialCollegeLondon/natural_number_game/pull/83

Johan Commelin (May 14 2020 at 15:15):

Why don't you teach him English first?

Johan Commelin (May 14 2020 at 15:15):

That will unlock soooo many levels

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:15):

Note that I started translating using tutoiement, ie translating "you" as if I were talking to children. This is because adults are meant to play the English version.

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:16):

I tried to use the lockdown for English teaching, but he has strong French genes, battling against foreign languages like crazy

Johan Commelin (May 14 2020 at 15:16):

In the Netherlands, people under 75 are offended if you use "vous"

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:17):

I told him he could watch star wars movies all day long if we switched on English audio. He refused to watch anything

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:17):

I couldn't stand playing any videogame giving me "tu"

Reid Barton (May 14 2020 at 15:18):

maybe we can support two languages, fr_tu fr_vous

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:18):

In principle this is possible of course.

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:18):

Let's try to get tutorials+addition world translated to tu first...

Johan Commelin (May 14 2020 at 15:19):

We could have voustorials later (-;

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:20):

Ok, I'm done with this internationalization PR. Let's start working now, it must be close to midday already.

Reid Barton (May 14 2020 at 15:20):

Wait, is "tutor" actually cognate to "tu"?

Reid Barton (May 14 2020 at 15:21):

hmm, apparently not :frown:

Patrick Massot (May 14 2020 at 15:22):

Seriously, this is not only for my son. If we want this game to be available to normal French undergrads (even maths nerds) it must be translated.

ROCKY KAMEN-RUBIO (Jun 05 2020 at 19:47):

I did some more work on this and want to submitt a PR. I am also a git noob. When I clone the repo to my machine it looks like the locale file isn't getting copied. Should I just submit a PR with my NNG_French_Stub.lean as a separate file?

Jalex Stark (Jun 05 2020 at 19:49):

EDIT: no, the PR has been merged. a fresh clone of the repo should have the folder locale/

Patrick Massot (Jun 05 2020 at 19:51):

There is no lean file editing involved in the translation process, what did you do?

Patrick Massot (Jun 05 2020 at 19:52):

Did you follow the instructions at https://github.com/mpedramfar/Lean-game-maker/blob/master/USAGE.md#internationalization?

Patrick Massot (Jun 05 2020 at 19:53):

If you worked on the French translation then the only file to edit is https://github.com/ImperialCollegeLondon/natural_number_game/blob/master/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/content.po

Patrick Massot (Jun 05 2020 at 19:54):

and, although it's technically possible to edit it by hand, using poedit is more convenient.

Jalex Stark (Jun 05 2020 at 19:57):

woah poedit is pretty cool
https://poedit.net/

Oh ok, I didn't see those instructions. I had a file called NNG_French_Stub.lean from a while ago but this sounds much better.

Sebastien Gouezel (Jun 05 2020 at 20:59):

@Patrick Massot I had make a PR with some more French translation at https://github.com/PatrickMassot/natural_number_game/pull/1, but maybe you got sidetracked by the sphere eversion project and didn't notice it.

Just cloned again and I see the locale folder now with the .po files. Not sure what happened. My wifi has been spotty lately...

ROCKY KAMEN-RUBIO (Jun 05 2020 at 21:17):

Is there an easy way to get changes from the French_Stub file format into .po? I can copy and paste by hand if it comes to it. Either way, I'll get my changes into the .po file and then submit a PR with that.

Patrick Massot (Jun 05 2020 at 21:22):

@Sebastien Gouezel I completely missed that PR. There is no point at all in PRing to my fork instead of upstream, but that doesn't explain why I didn't see a GitHub notification.

Patrick Massot (Jun 05 2020 at 21:25):

It's still true that I'm having way too many projects in parallel, even counting only Lean projects.

Patrick Massot (Jun 05 2020 at 21:26):

Rocky, I'm sorry but I don't see an easy way to convert from a raw translation of the Lean files to a po file. The whole point of these po files it that is will be much easier to adapt to updates of the English version.

At the time the localization was not merged upstream, so this was the only place to PR!

Patrick Massot (Jun 06 2020 at 08:31):

I wanted to write you should move the PR now, but first I checked and you did it 30 seconds ago.

All good, it's a little annoying but shouldn't take too long to transfer the translations. They were pretty rough so far too so this will be a good excuse to have to proof read as well.

Patrick Massot (Jun 06 2020 at 21:45):

Did you check you're not duplicating Sébastien's effort in https://github.com/ImperialCollegeLondon/natural_number_game/pull/90?
