Topic: Spanish NNG

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:20):

Just creating this thread as a marker that I am indeed working on this.

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:20):

Also, a question. There seems to be some sort of stub Spanish translation already? But it doesn't seem to be in the repo, and I don't know how to modify it.

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:21):

I'd like to change this, for example. The words don't have the correct declension (should be normales/relajadas/ninguna)

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:21):

But Ctrl+F relajado on the repo yields no results. What's going on?

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:21):

@Kevin Buzzard

Kevin Buzzard (Jul 11 2025 at 15:22):

I'm afraid I have no idea about how translations work.

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:22):

Anyone I could ask?

Kevin Buzzard (Jul 11 2025 at 15:24):

All I can say is "look at the last two PRs I merged (yesterday) to see how to add a Ukrainian translation" and then "now perhaps poke around to see if there are analogous files in es subdirectories corresponding to the uk (:= Ukrainian, not United Kingdom, we're en) directory.

This seems to be part of the interface, not of NNG itself

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:25):

Is there a separate repo for that?

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:25):

There is!

Kevin Buzzard (Jul 11 2025 at 15:25):

lean4game

Kevin Buzzard (Jul 11 2025 at 15:25):

oh dear, so should I be telling my Ukrainian contacts to make PRs to that repo too??

Yaël Dillies (Jul 11 2025 at 15:29):

I suspect so! Right now, the content of the game is translated, but not the interface. Definitely better than before, though!

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:30):

I wonder if the interface was machine-translated, I find a few of these translations quite clunky

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:30):

I guess I'll start by doing a PR there

Kevin Buzzard (Jul 11 2025 at 15:33):

My understanding of the Chinese translation of NNG is that there are suspicions that it was machine-translated, but I figured that it was far better than nothing!

Aaron Liu (Jul 11 2025 at 15:33):

I'll take a look

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:34):

Hm, I have a question about the translation. Should we use formal language/conjugations? I get the impression that the vibe is supposed to be more laid back.

Kevin Buzzard (Jul 11 2025 at 15:37):

well if you're doing the translation then you get to add your own vibe :-)

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:42):

I'm nearly confident formal language is excessive and jarring for a game setting like this. I am somewhat biased though; as I understand it Latin Americans (like me) tend to use it much less than speakers from Spain do. Are there any other Spanish speakers here I could ask for comment?

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:43):

I at least know of @María Inés de Frutos Fernández and @Bernardo Anibal Subercaseaux Roa

María Inés de Frutos Fernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:48):

I think informal language should be fine.

Kenny Lau (Jul 11 2025 at 15:51):

which spanish variety should it be translated to?

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:52):

We don't have a British English NNG, so I don't think we need both a Latin American/Spanish NNG.

Kenny Lau (Jul 11 2025 at 15:55):

I'm just wondering if you would use tú or usted

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:55):

Oh yeah, that's what I was asking when I asked about formal language

Kenny Lau (Jul 11 2025 at 15:55):

also is there somewhere that i can see your partial translation?

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 15:56):

I'll be periodically updating my fork https://github.com/vihdzp/NNG4

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:05):

The Spanish text translated "Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf" as "Heinrich-Heine-Universität de Düsseldorf"

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:05):

There is no way a human did that

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:12):

Oh actually, there's a set game translated into Spanish I can use as reference!

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:13):

...it's not a very good translation

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:13):

"pulsa le tecla" really?
image.png

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:14):

The game also seems to alternate between formal and informal language

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:14):

That's not good

Aaron Liu (Jul 11 2025 at 16:14):

oh no

Aaron Liu (Jul 11 2025 at 16:15):

maybe you should fix it

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:15):

One thing at a time!

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:15):

I should probably do the NNG first

Violeta Hernández (Jul 11 2025 at 16:43):

Just did a PR for the lean4game interface. It'd be great if a native Spanish speaker could review it. Left some comments about why I tweaked the translations the way I did.

María Inés de Frutos Fernández (Jul 11 2025 at 17:04):

Thanks for improving this translation! I left a few comments.

I think you'll find that actually we don't have an American English NNG :-)

Andrii Kurdiumov (Jul 12 2025 at 03:06):

@Kevin Buzzard I already send Pr to lean4game before NNG4. I also submit 2 additional PRs (which are still sitting) about what potential pain point with translation and to what pay attention if asking for review.

Except these 2 repos no need to do anything for Spanish translation I believe. Obviously if you want work on other games you should go to other repos too
