local notation and projections

Does anyone know how to make projections and local notation work together nicely? See https://github.com/leanprover-community/mathlib/pull/5137/files#diff-a0856049a12c1ebec42a2a22069aa40e76ef26f3cabb6087b6c049a63cda64e1R57-R66 where Bhavik wants to use notation to keep some statements readable, but also project out of the notation.
