Topic: Annoying timezone prompt

Frédéric Dupuis (Jan 17 2025 at 15:20):

For a few times now, I've been asked to change my timezone in Zulip to match my computer's setting. The first time I clicked "Yes" thinking I had forgotten to change it. But this actually did nothing, since my computer's timezone (America/Montreal) doesn't exist in the Zulip system (so I have to resort to America/New_York here). This is obviously not a big deal since I can just turn it off, but it would be nice at some point to have the system in Zulip match the IANA timezone database, which is used by a lot of computers (most Linux distributions at least).

Thank you for the report, Frédéric Dupuis ! We'll look into it.

Anders Kaseorg (Jan 21 2025 at 23:06):

FYI, America/Montreal is a legacy alias for America/Toronto. (They previously differed in their pre-1970 dates, but support for those pre-1970 distinctions was removed in tzdata 2021b.)

The quirk where you get the time zone banner for that combination of time zones should be fixed once https://github.com/zulip/zulip/pull/33143 is deployed to Zulip Cloud.
