Topic: Blurry fonts in zulip desktop
Joachim Breitner (Apr 14 2025 at 18:12):
After upgrading to zulip Desktop 5.11.1 -> 5.12.0 on NixOS, all the fonts seem to be blurry in a way they were not before. Of course this could be caused by some other updated package, but I gotta start somewhere – so, did anyone else notice something like this?
Joachim Breitner (Apr 15 2025 at 07:49):
I don’t have that issue with VSCode or Telegram or so, so it is unlikely a general issue with all electron apps.
Comparing
nix run github:NixOS/nixpkgs/9c6b49aeac36e2ed73a8c472f1546f6d9cf1addc#zulip
nix run github:NixOS/nixpkgs/26d499fc9f1d567283d5d56fcf367edd815dba1d#zulip
shows that the difference is between these two, and not other packages updated yesterday.
But looking at the nixpkgs and zulip git logs, the only real changes is the upgrade of Electron from 32 to 35, and the changelog there shows nothing.
Hmm. I guess I can just hope that I’m not the only one affected and someone will fix it at some point.

Thanks for the report! I passed it along in the Zulip development community.

Are you using Wayland with fractional scaling? You are likely seeing something related to https://issues.chromium.org/issues/336007385 and https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3346 and https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/issues/132, which seems to be quite an entire mess that’s going to require new Wayland protocol extensions to fix reliably. Nothing we can do about it for now.
Joachim Breitner (Apr 16 2025 at 06:11):
Thanks! No, still using plain old X11.
