Topic: Changes to typing on Mobile

Julian Berman (Mar 11 2025 at 19:43):

I'm not sure if anyone else is in this category but typing on Android+FF has become essentially unusable for me in the past week or two, has anyone else noticed this?
The page continuously jumps up and hides the text box:

I'm on mobile (clearly) so I'll have to search the zulip bug tracker later but just curious if I'm the only one

Julian Berman (Mar 11 2025 at 19:45):

Even while just reading I suddenly find myself having to scroll lots, when I click on a channel I get sent way back in time

Alex Vandiver (Mar 11 2025 at 19:46):

I don't know which client you used to send the message above, but it sent before the upload completed, so that link doesn't work

Alex Vandiver (Mar 11 2025 at 19:47):

Is this on mobile web (on the normal browser on the mobile device), the old mobile app, or the new still-in-beta Flutter mobile app?

Julian Berman (Mar 11 2025 at 19:48):

That was me losing service as the train left the station :) attached again

It's mobile web on FF 137.0b3 (so of course it's possibly a FF bug but I haven't noticed this kind of behavior elsewhere quite yet)

Alex Vandiver (Mar 11 2025 at 19:59):

Hm. I can replicate on Firefox, but not Chrome.

Alex Vandiver (Mar 11 2025 at 20:00):

Scrolling down in the main window does show the textbox, out from behind the keyboard

Yes, also facing this. I can usally work around it by scrolling a bit up and down, eventually it comes into focus.

For me I think it coincided with FF 132, and this release entry made that plausible:

  • Firefox now uses resizes-visual as the default value of the interactive-widget property of the viewport <meta> element. This means that when the software keyboard is shown, Firefox resizes the page's visual viewport but not its layout viewport, avoiding an expensive reflow and resulting in a more usable layout on many pages.

Thanks for the report -- I've brought it up here. We're in the last throes of getting Zulip 10.0 out the door (which doesn't matter for Zulip Cloud instances like this one, which get continuous updates), so we may or not be able to get a quick fix out.
