Topic: Emoji user badges

J. Ryan Stinnett (Sep 06 2025 at 18:45):

I see some people have emoji badges next to their names (:neovim:, :emacs:, etc.) in the Zulip user list. I can't find a way to choose such a thing for my own profile (if I wanted to)... Does it need to be set by a Zulip admin?

Bryan Gin-ge Chen (Sep 06 2025 at 18:59):

I think those users have just set their status to those emojis?

I think "status" is the thing which appears below your username? I've just cut and pasted an emoji and added it to my username, my guess is that this is what some people are doing at least. I am an admin though, but I suspect this is not relevant?

Bryan Gin-ge Chen (Sep 06 2025 at 19:02):

I think a status can consist of both an emoji and a message - the emoji gets displayed like a badge, and the message shows up below?

Kevin Buzzard (Sep 06 2025 at 19:03):

Yeah it seems to me that there are two ways to get an emoji at the end of your username: (1) set your status (then you have a small list of emojis to choose from) (and a message below your username) or (2) add an emoji to your username (and then it can be any emoji, but don't go overboard, this is a serious research forum!)

Bryan Gin-ge Chen (Sep 06 2025 at 19:04):

There's a short list of emoji presets for the status, but you can actually set it to anything if you click the smiley to the left of the text box.

Kevin Buzzard (Sep 06 2025 at 19:05):

...and you can also just put an emoji at the end of your name :-) (oh but then maybe it appears if people ping you? so maybe Bryan's method is preferred) (indeed it does)

J. Ryan Stinnett (Sep 06 2025 at 19:25):

Ah okay, thanks all, indeed it's the emoji part of the status.
