- Zulip’s next-gen mobile app is now in public beta. If offers a sleek new design and a faster, smoother experience. Check out the announcement post for details and instructions on how to try the beta!
Hi folks! As the mobile beta app announcement blog post notes, LaTeX display is not yet fully implemented in the new mobile app. This is definitely something we plan to fix, but it's a significant amount of work. So a question for this community: how disappointed would you be if the new app was rolled out to all users before full support for LaTeX is added.

Jireh Loreaux (Dec 18 2024 at 23:10):
personally, this would only be a minor concern for me, so I wouldn't mind if it was rolled out without full LaTeX support.
Kevin Buzzard (Dec 18 2024 at 23:15):
That's quite a carefully chosen example because the latex didn't involve any fancy characters. What does look like?
Kevin Buzzard (Dec 18 2024 at 23:17):
(switching to the beta app) aha, it's just the raw text which I typed. I guess people use code a lot more than latex on this site...
Floris van Doorn (Dec 18 2024 at 23:17):
I basically stopped using the mobile app because it was unusably slow for me, so I guess I should check out the beta app.
Kevin Buzzard (Dec 18 2024 at 23:18):
I mean, I'm old enough to remember when people wrote latex in sci.math.research
in their posts and it was just displayed like that anyway.
Alya Abbott (Dec 18 2024 at 23:25):
The example wasn't actually chosen carefully -- I just scrolled around until I found one. :)

Heavily disappointed. I grew up with my hands glued to a smartphone. More seriously, I tend to use zulip on my phone a lot and anything that makes the mobile experience painful is a big negative.

Thanks everyone for the TeX feedback! @Shreyas Srinivas I've noted your special emphasis on this feature on our issue for it and in the Zulip development community, here: https://chat.zulip.org/#narrow/channel/48-mobile/topic/TeX.20formatting.20.23F46/near/2018462
