Topic: Reminder functionality

Joachim Breitner (Jun 10 2024 at 19:41):

One feature I miss compared to Slack is the ability to mark a message as “remind me later”, where I could give it a time (a bit like the schedule send feature) and at that time a message is marked as unread again, or I get a DM from a bot to look at that message again. Is that possible maybe with Zulip?

Kim Morrison (Jun 10 2024 at 22:20):

I've been thinking the same thing.

Kevin Buzzard (Jun 11 2024 at 07:20):

Yes me too. I have been using starred messages as a substitute for this (eg "see something on mobile, not at a computer, want to test something so star it"). This system has not worked for me for years now. Recently I realised I was going to hit 1800 starred messages and I couldn't find any way to programmatically unstar them so I spent probably an hour in total manually unstarring and then tried again; I think I've already hit three figures.

Thanks for your feedback, Joachim Breitner! We're tracking a remind-me feature and have loose plans to implement it within the next year.

Alya Abbott (Jun 11 2024 at 15:19):

In the meantime, you could quote-and-reply + schedule for yourself the message you'd like to be reminded of, as a workaround.

Joachim Breitner (Jun 11 2024 at 19:51):

Thanks! I’ll set a reminder to check again in a year… oh, nevermind ;-)

I don’t understand the “+ schedule” part. Is this referring to some Zulip functionality?

Thanks Alex!

Patrick Massot (Jun 11 2024 at 20:06):

Alya, I would say this feature is not very easy to discover.

Alya Abbott (Jun 11 2024 at 22:50):

Would you appreciate a one-time message or banner to tell you about it? Or some other way to find out that it exists? It's used for a very small fraction of message that are sent, so we don't want it to be too intrusive, either.

Joachim Breitner (Jun 12 2024 at 07:09):

I didn’t find it hard to discover, but that was because I expected it to exist (from other tools), and then it was the natural place to look for.

Patrick Massot (Jun 12 2024 at 08:48):

I don’t know how to make it more discoverable. I am not at all a user interface designer. I vaguely remember that there was some kind of tour when I first logged in (but it was a very long time ago). Maybe it could be included here (but maybe not, since it is a pretty specialized feature). I really don’t know.
