Topic: Resolving topics

Alex J. Best (Jul 12 2021 at 19:28):

I just noticed Zulip now has a feature to mark topics/questions as resolved, by clicking a little tick mark next to the topic title. This simply edits the topic title to add a tick mark it seems https://zulip.com/help/resolve-a-topic.
Should we use this and/or encourage people to mark things as resolved?
I can see this being helpful personally when scanning topics to see if there are some unanswered questions recently, but conversely it could be annoying if we ended up like stack exchange telling people each other to tick stuff all the time (imo).
Also testing: it does this which is maybe also annoying?

I think other people can mark things as resolved?

Bhavik Mehta (Jul 12 2021 at 23:37):

Hmm, there's a button for it for me but I can't seem to actually mark it, never mind then

Bryan Gin-ge Chen has marked this topic as resolved.

Perhaps topic-creators and zulip admins?

Bryan Gin-ge Chen (Jul 12 2021 at 23:39):

Yep, the article says anyone with the ability to edit the topic can do it.

Eric Wieser (Oct 04 2021 at 09:49):

I've noticed that marking a topic as resolved marks every message above it as "edited", which is a little odd.

Sebastian Ullrich (Oct 04 2021 at 09:51):

Oh no, because they edit the check mark into the title for every single message...?

Sebastian Ullrich (Oct 04 2021 at 09:52):

It's only the initial one in this case: https://leanprover.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/270676-lean4/topic/.E2.9C.94.203.20or.204.3F

Gabriel Ebner (Oct 04 2021 at 09:56):

In the thread you've linked to, both messages show as edited for me.

Eric Wieser (Oct 04 2021 at 09:57):

The edited marker is sometimes in the left margin and sometimes to the right of the name

Gabriel Ebner (Oct 04 2021 at 09:57):

I have never seen an edit marker in the left margin. A/B testing maybe?

Eric Wieser (Oct 04 2021 at 09:58):

The next message will have one:

Eric Wieser (Oct 04 2021 at 09:58):

After I edit it

For me as well, after reloading the page :fear:

Johan Commelin (Oct 04 2021 at 10:10):

I feel like "resolving topics" is a nice idea that was implemented too hastily.

Johan Commelin (Oct 04 2021 at 10:10):

It has too many annoying side effects currently.

Johan Commelin (Oct 04 2021 at 10:11):

Like bumping up the notification counter, and the issue mentioned in OP

Gabriel Ebner (Oct 04 2021 at 10:19):

Can we disable the resolving feature?

Sebastian Ullrich (Oct 04 2021 at 10:26):

I don't think so

Sebastian Ullrich (Oct 04 2021 at 21:11):

"Resolve topic should mark topic as unread only for participants" https://github.com/zulip/zulip/issues/19709

Sebastian Ullrich (Oct 04 2021 at 21:14):

Ooh, this one is also fun https://github.com/zulip/zulip/issues/19651

Sebastian Ullrich (Oct 12 2021 at 06:41):

Another one: https://github.com/zulip/zulip/issues/19916

Johan Commelin (Oct 19 2021 at 08:15):

Should we ask for a zulip setting that disables the "resolve" feature?

Sebastian Ullrich (Oct 19 2021 at 08:17):

There is https://github.com/zulip/zulip/issues/19955

Johan Commelin (Oct 19 2021 at 08:31):

Let's :+1: that issue
