Re: Emily's comment about Galois. There is a book The Genesis of the Abstract Group Concept that gives some history on this topic. (I am not a mathematician, maybe others have reading suggestions too). There is also a book from the European Mathematical Society that transcribes his writings (side by side French and an English translation) complete with misprints, strikethoughs, etc. It is very interesting to see how he thought of Galois theory in his time and how it subsequently developed.
